I should probably do ten things, since it's been a while. But I'm not gonna! So there!
Duh. Me and everyone else in America. All these years, I've been kind of a middling Beyonce fan. I liked her, I thought she was very talented. But I also always found her a little tiny bit overrated. I mean, really? Queen Bey? Flawless? I wasn't fully on board. But what she did with Formation, and what she did at the Super Bowl...I'm sold. Formation makes me want to stand and slow clap every single time. Watch the video here.
I do not know why it took me this long to start watching this show. I have adored Keri Russell since I was a tween watching her on The Mickey Mouse Club. Felicity is one of my favorite shows of all time hashtag college life hashtag TEAM BEN. I also loved Jonathan Rhys on Brothers and Sisters. When I found out about this show, I totally meant to watch, but somehow missed the start of it. Fast forward way too long and now here I am catching up on Amazon Prime. It's so good! They're a seemingly normal American couple who are really KGB spies, partnered as strangers, married with children, fighting the good fight for the motherland, falling in love, fighting bad guys, fighting each other...Why aren't more people talking about it? Watch it!
Room (the book)
I cannot speak for the film, I haven't seen it yet, but I read the book and it's amazing. I hadn't heard of it until I started seeing press for the movie. The gist of it is, a woman is kidnapped and locked up in a room (a shed, retrofitted to house a person for who knows how long) in a man's backyard for seven years, during which time she has a son. When I found out the book was narrated by the five-year-old who is hidden away in a closet every night so he'll never see his father, I knew I had to read it before I saw the film. I realize the subject matter is grim, but I will say that the ending is very hopeful, and I couldn't put it down.
One of my friends described this movie as "brutiful" - brutal and beautiful. I can't think of a better summary. This was the movie I anticipated the most this year, and it completely lived up to the hype. Leonardo DiCaprio has been getting steadily better with every passing year, and maybe, FINALLY this will be the year the Academy gives him a fair shake. If he doesn't win, he should set fire to the building. I haven't seen Spotlight yet but I'm hoping to catch it before the Oscars. As problematic as they are, watching is an annual thing for me, and I try to see as many of the movies as I can. But without having seen that one, The Revenant is my pick for Best Picture. You can read more about the making of the movie in this New York Times piece on filmmaker Alejandro Iñárritu.
I know, it's not exciting necessarily for at least half of the people who read this site (hi!), but I have seriously found the best pair of underwear ever: Gap Ultra Low Girl Shorts. Caveat: I would not call these granny panties, but they are so comfortable and have a lot of coverage, so I could see how a person might go there. Frankly, I don't care. They are the most comfortable stretchy underwear of all time, and they make my stomach look flatter and my butt look cute. Check 'em out!
