Hi.

I'm Sarah, a Seattle- based writer, artist, yogi, dog-lover and outspoken feminist. I like books, wine, and gray days. Hope you'll stay and hang out for a while!

5 Things I'm Into, Vol. 1

Because when there's so much good stuff, sometimes you've gotta consolidate.

Call Your Girlfriend

Call Your Girlfriend, a podcast for long-distance besties everywhere, has quickly become a staple during my walks and car rides. My coworker turned me on to this smart, funny series featuring Ann Friedman, freelance journalist and columnist for NYMag.com; and Aminatou Sow, founder of Tech Ladymafia. You want to be listening to these witty, accomplished feminists and their thoughtful and funny long-distance bestie chats. Tune in every other week as they discuss Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the beauty of caftans, menstruation news, Kimye, Pitbull, Hillary Rodham Clinton, casual racism, emoji, straight people, California and so much more.

Descent

If I had a tagline for last month, it would be, "Skip Girl On A Train and read Descent instead." It's a mystery, it's a thriller, and it's also really beautifully written. Not for the faint of heart, Descent is the story of a kidnapped teenage track star and her family: the brother left for dead in the woods, the mother drowning in depression, the father determined to find her. I couldn't put it down. If I were making the movie, I'd get Jonathan Demme to direct it, because there's a distinctly creepy, Silence of the Lambs feel to it.

The Daily Show: Brave New Girl

I swear to you all, I had this exact same thought before I knew that Jon Stewart - aka my hero, aka the love of my life - covered it. I love that we're talking about transgender people. I don't love how heavily we're focusing on their beauty. "Because it's really heartening to see that everyone is willing to not only accept Caitlyn Jenner as a woman, but to waste no time in treating her like a woman." Amen, Jon. Amen. Important. Watch it. Non-negotiable. "Caitlyn, when you were a man, we could talk about your athleticism, your business acumen...But now you're a woman, and your looks are really the only thing we care about."

Aritzia

A few months ago, my wonderful friend Elin sent me a sweater and a couple of tops from Aritzia. I hadn't heard of the store before, believe it or not, but I loved the things she sent, so when it was time to shop for a few new items for summer, I hopped on their website. Needless to say, that was a rabbit hole. I think I'm probably on the cusp of the target audience, but because I can live in a mostly-casual wardrobe, it really works for me. If the prices are a bit high for your budget, don't worry - they have great sales.

Ecaille hair color

I'm no fashion guru, but I do pay attention to my hair. For a long time, I've been wearing mine dark brunette, fighting my natural light brown/dirty blonde color. I was feeling a little burned out, wanting to try a new style without cutting my slow-to-grow mane, and I was thinking about doing an ombre until I discovered ecaille (tortoiseshell) hair coloring. It's a sister to bayalage, but even prettier. I did it last month and I'm getting so many compliments on my mix of dark and light color. Check it out!

Until next time! What are you into at the moment? Leave it in the comments or tweet at me!
