When I was growing up, I used to dance ballet. Yes, curvy, short me - I can hardly believe it myself, it seems like a lifetime ago. I was always terrible at team sports, and that can make a kid feel like she's just a bad athlete in general. Dance was the perfect intersection of music and theater, and I realized that athleticism can also be beautiful and creative, and you don't have to be good at sports to be an athlete. I quit dancing after breaking my leg and not ever fully recovering, but I attribute dance to me ultimately learning to enjoy gym workouts, yoga and spinning.
I am so lucky to live within walking distance of the Pacific Northwest Ballet and try to see several productions each year. The season kicks off this month with George Balanchine's Jewels. Seattleites, you should definitely check it out!
