Slick with sweat of burden,
Flanks heaving miles from home,
Carrying her graciously, one shoe clipping ahead of the other,
Onward to the next obstacle, the next day's work.
Neck arched to receive the gift of water,
Never aiming for more,
Content to be someone else's power,
Someone else's support.
He is vigorous might in gentle confinement,
Selflessness in motion,
Generosity in spirit,
Kindness that is of the earth and the sky,
Stretching endlessly as far as limbs can carry.
There are stories in his eyes,
Secrets that do not have a voice,
That only love can hear.
He will never break.
He will never stop running toward the light
That lingers far in the distance,
Days away but somehow within reach.
He will carry her to her repose
And only then will he rest,
One ear always perked,
Ready to bend his weary back again.
